Bali's sacred spring temple, home to a thousand-year-old purification ritual.
Tirta Empul is built around a natural spring that bubbles up from the ground and feeds the temple's pools. Balinese Hindus have treated this water as holy for more than a thousand years, and it still flows clear and cool through the site today. You can watch the source welling up in the inner courtyard before it runs out to the bathing pools.
At the row of stone spouts, worshippers move from fountain to fountain, cleansing body and mind in the melukat ritual. Visitors are welcome to take part - your guide arranges a sarong and walks you through the etiquette so you can join respectfully. Stepping into the line with cool spring water running over your hands turns the visit from sightseeing into something you actually share.
Beyond the pools, the temple opens into peaceful courtyards dotted with koi ponds and finely carved stone shrines and gates. It's an active place of worship, so you'll often see families arriving with offerings. Take your time wandering the quieter corners once the ritual is done.
