Bali's iconic stepped rice fields and a working coffee plantation, just north of Ubud.
Carved into the valley over generations, the Tegalalang terraces fall away in wide green steps that follow the curve of the hillside. Walk the narrow paths between the paddies, cross the little bamboo bridges, and you'll pass farmers working the same slopes their families have tended for centuries. Come early and the morning mist lifting off the valley is worth the early alarm.
The terraces are still fed by subak - Bali's communal irrigation system, in continuous use for over a thousand years and recognised by UNESCO. Water is shared field to field through hand-cut channels, guided by the temples and the farming calendar. It's why Tegalalang is a living farm rather than a viewpoint: everything you see was planted, flooded, and harvested by the village around you.
Right beside the fields, a working plantation grows coffee, cacao, and spices. Walk the shaded grounds, watch beans roasted by hand, and sit down to a complimentary tasting flight of local brews and herbal teas - including the famous kopi luwak, Bali's rare civet coffee, straight from where it's made. A relaxed, fragrant way to round off the terraces.
