Bali's most famous sea temple, with the tide breaking around the rock at sunset.
Tanah Lot sits on a rocky outcrop just offshore, cut off by the sea at high tide so it seems to rise straight out of the water. It's one of Bali's key sea temples, ringed by waves that break and spray against the base of the rock. Even before sunset, the sight of it standing alone against the ocean is unmistakably Bali.
This is the classic end to a West Bali day. As the sun drops toward the horizon the sky turns gold and the temple falls into silhouette against the water - the photo everyone comes for. We time the visit for late afternoon so you're in place as the light softens and the sea begins to glow.
The clifftops on either side give sweeping views along the shore, with smaller shrines and lookout points to wander between. The market path winding down to the temple buzzes with stalls, snacks, and souvenirs. At low tide you can walk out across the sand toward the rock itself.
