A dawn boat trip from Lovina's black-sand coast to see wild spinner dolphins.
While it's still dark, a traditional outrigger jukung pushes off from Lovina's black-sand beach and heads out onto the calm Bali Sea. The water on the north coast is glassy and gentle at this hour, nothing like the surf of the south. As the sky begins to lighten, dozens of small boats fan out across the bay to search for the pods.
Within about half an hour you're often surrounded by wild spinner dolphins racing the swell, leaping and rolling alongside the boat. They are truly wild, so sightings are common rather than guaranteed - but Lovina is one of the most reliable places in Bali to see them. Watching them surface as the sun comes up is an only-in-the-north experience.
Lovina sits far from the busy south, on a stretch of black volcanic sand backed by mountains.
